Water Curtains

This work was in collaboration with A. Lukyanov. It was a feasibility study to determine whether liquid curtains can be used as acoustic barriers by constructing liquid walls. We derived a thin-film approximation of the full Navier-Stokes equations and conducted numerical simulations of a simplified thin film fluid mechanics model of liquid curtains.

Initially we were more concerned with stability of the curtain rather than it’s acoustic properties. The curtain is stable if enough liquid is pumped to the top, the external pressure is low enough and the viscosity of the fluid is high enough.
