Water infiltration

This project is joint with B. Ashby, C. Bortolozo and A. Lukyanov. It was partially funded through the EPSRC grant EP/P000835/1 and the Newton Fund grant 261865400. The overarching aim is to construct a physics-based prediction mechanism for landslides in Brazil, one of the main goals of the CEMADEN natural disaster prediction centre.

Below is a simulation of water infiltration after a significant volume of rain on a hillside. The soil properties (top) are determined through geo-resistivity techniques, the soil saturation (bottom) is initially defined by the water table, after rain the soil quickly becomes saturated in regions of high permeability.
